A Private Space For Us

Written for Sabrina & Jason to be read on their wedding day.

We’ve planted a seed
in a private little space
outside of you
outside of me
that space is us
just the two of us alone
we’re calm
we’re warm
and we’re not going anywhere.

just to know this is forever
is a private gift
to each other
to ourselves
we hold it warmly in our bellies
as we look back at the world
at you
at our family, at our friends
We’ve moving forward now, together now

And, yes, we’ll tug and we’ll pull at the challenges of our lives
And yet, after a time, we’ll turn back to each other
turn back to the warm and calm understanding of
our private little space
to find that the seed we’ve planted
has begun to show the roots of our union.

And our union will grow — to become 3 or 4 or 5?
They’ll be holding our hands
sitting in on our laps,
laughing and running and shouting too loud
we’ll teach them the laws of the universe
they’ll rekindle our imaginations
and when the fall, we cry

And we will shape our own family,
just as you have shaped us,
we’ll prepare them for their endeavors,
just as you have prepared us
they’ll grow into their own, one by one
each strong, unique, and opinionated

And in that time,
we’ll pull and we’ll tug at the
challenges in our lives,
Realizing one day, that one by one,
our children have grown,
our union has become 5, 4, 3, and then 2 again,
and we’ll turn back to the warm and calm
understanding of our private little space,
remembering that our love is a private whisper
outside of you
outside of me
just the two of us alone
we’re warm,
we’re calm
and we’re not going anywhere.
